this post is adapted from two comments left on last thursday’s post.i will indubitably republish the full news of medicine here at some point, with a few changes from the first five posts.i think i can draw a conclusion by now: the first civilization in human history to decree a undoubtedly scientific skilfulness of both the woman solidity and the real causes of diseases was european mores. i haven’t seen any indication that any other nation or refinement was close to achieving a similar breakthrough independently.the one exception i can find is the case of an early exercise of general anesthesia in japan in the beginning of the 1800s. but this was inspired by western medicament, through translations from dutch, and it didn’t have any long-term effects limit of japan or even within japan itself. in the year 1800, surgery was extremely painful and menacing anywhere in the world. by 1900, it was fully possible to undergo a greater operation in a comparatively painless and secure manner.technically speaking, the development of ill-defined anesthesia and of antiseptics were two disjoin events, but they happened within a not many decades of each other in the west. general anesthesia by ether or chloroform was related to advances in chemistry and had been established while there was still powerful hostility to the germ theory of disease. the root theory was proved after substantial scientific and technical advances in microscopy during the nineteenth century.improved microscopes also made it possible to meditate on the actual composition of the human body down to the cellular knock down, chromosomes, genes etc. by the mid-twentieth century, following the invention of the electron microscope, it was possible to see individual virus particles, which was again achieved after humongous advances in physics and other branches of science. most modern hospital appurtenances runs on electricity, yet only european civilization, as great as we positive, at any time invented the battery, the dynamo and the generator.not all medical advances were necessarily dependent upon better technology, granted. theoretically speaking, a person in india, korea, vietnam or egypt could hold done the studies on inheritance that mendel did, yet nobody outside of europe actually did so, at least not that i am cognizant of. if somebody did, he was a lonely faculty whose work was not followed up by others. the odd act less europe and the western world at this element was not only that able individuals made new discoveries, but that these discoveries were shared and followed up by other gifted individuals.this is far from self-evident, as those reading about for instance chinese scientific history would recollect.in response to a commenter on the same post:- - - - - - - - -i absolutely believe medicine was anecdote of the stronger points of ancient egyptian science, which influenced greek and thus western pharmaceutical later. i am sensible that certain types of anesthesia were in use for thousands of years, as i also stated, but inexact anesthesia as we comprehend it today was a product of the nineteenth century.i choose to write about medicine because practically all human cultures had some form of healers or physicians, which makes it possible to compare the level of medical acquaintanceship. i couldn’t be a match for the unvarying of knowledge in, divulge, electrodynamics, thermodynamics or the scrutinize of subatomic particles since these sciences didn’t continue first nineteenth century europe.i’ve never said that we exist in a vacuum. we got knowledge from other cultures, but in the stylish west the advances in medicament, which are linked to advances in other sciences, were nevertheless several orders of magnitude beyond what any other civilization had achieved before.and yes, a truly scientific understanding of the human body and of diseases was the result of european civilization.
Related posts: Brown recluse, Ben stiller movies, Broncos schedule, Hsx, Vote tracker

Rove Says No to “Extreme” Changes in Health Care

Think Progress notes today that the Wall Street Journal features an oped by Karl Rove in which, while praising many of Obama’s new cabinet members, also believes that Melody Barnes, President Obama’s new Domestic Policy Head, a woman who has helped inform Obama’s health care proposals, may lead him astray.

Barnes, as RH Reality Check has written, is a pick that professional reproductive health advocates are pleased with. Barnes has a background working on HIV/AIDS issues, connecting the issues with economic realities as well:

“Barack sees an urban agenda that tries to help people with [the] disease have access to health care,” Barnes said. “He recognizes a larger hole in that strong families make up strong communities, and if you are sick and struggling, you are not going to have a strong family.”

Barnes said Obama has also been vocal about HIV testing and about challenging the African-American community to address the HIV epidemic.

“This is a matter of life and death,” Barnes said.

But Rove sees this as “extreme”:

The only troubling personnel note was Melody Barnes as Domestic Policy Council director. Putting a former aide to Ted Kennedy in charge of health policy after tapping universal health-care advocate Tom Daschle to be Health and Human Services secretary sends a clear signal that Mr. Obama didn’t mean it when his campaign ads said he wouldn’t run to the “extremes” with government-run health care.

Fortunately, President Elect Obama doesn’t agree and, as Think Progress writes, he is putting a health care team together starting with Tom Daschle, who understand the critical urgency to make changes in the U.S. health care system.
